TOP UNIVERSITIES OF COMPUTER SCIENCE IN CHINA.

Computer science is the study of computers and their uses, and the field comprises a wide range of subjects. They include software engineering and design, artificial intelligence theory, programming languages, information systems and information technology. These are the top universities in China for computer science, which were ranked based on their reputation and research in the field.

1.TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY.

Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang”. The school was renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925. The name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928.

The faculty greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern. Tsinghua scholars Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque and Zhao Yuanren, renowned as the "Four Tutors" in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated this belief and had a profound impact on Tsinghua's later development.

Tsinghua University was forced to move to Kunming and join with Peking University and Nankai University to form the Southwest Associated University due to the Resistance War against the Japanese Invasion in 1937. In 1946 The University was moved back to its original location in Beijing after the war.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the University was molded into a polytechnic institute focusing on engineering in the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges undertaken in 1952. In November 1952, Mr. Jiang Nanxiang became the President of the University. He made significant contributions in leading Tsinghua to become the national center for training engineers and scientists with both professional proficiency and personal integrity.

Since China opened up to the world in 1978, Tsinghua University has developed at a breathtaking pace into a comprehensive research university. At present, the university has 14 schools and 56 departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The University has now over 25,900 students, including 13,100 undergraduates and 12,800 graduate students. As one of China’s most renowned universities, Tsinghua has become an important institution for fostering talent and scientific research.

2.HAUZHONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

3.SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), as one of the higher education institutions, which enjoy a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China, is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government. Through 120 years' unremitting efforts, SJTU has become a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized top university in China. 

By December 2016, SJTU has had 29 schools/departments, 25 directly affiliated institutions, 13 affiliated hospitals, with 16,188 undergraduates and 288,42 postgraduates (13,841 master degree candidates and 6,506 doctorate degree candidates) ,2, 134 overseas students. Today SJTU has 62 undergraduate programs covering 9 major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Since 2000, there are 47 national higher education teaching achievement prizes (31 completed independently). With 12 National Teaching and Talents Cultivation Bases, 9 National Off-campus Practice Education Bases, 6 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 2 national demonstration centers of virtual simulation experiment teaching,5 National Engineering Practice Education Centers, and 10 Shanghai Municipal Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centers, SJTU has 8 national-level teaching groups, 15 Shanghai Municipal teaching groups, 8 nationally renowned teachers and 36 Shanghai locally renowned teachers and owns 46 national-level quality courses, 12 national-level video-recorded open courses, 23 national-level quality resource-sharing courses, 153 Shanghai Municipal quality courses, 7 bilingual-teaching demonstration courses, and 11 Shanghai higher education all-English demonstration courses.

4.ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY.

Zhejiang University is a public institution that traces its roots back to 1897. The university is located in Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang province, about 110 miles southwest of Shanghai. More than 47,000 students attend the university, and around half of them study at the undergraduate level. Zhejiang University comprises seven campuses: the main campus, Zijingang, and the Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campuses. Tuition costs are higher for international students and vary by subject and degree level. University housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The university offers programs in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, the humanities and medicine. In all, students can choose from more than 120 undergraduate programs and well over 300 master's programs. Doctoral programs are also available. The primary language of instruction is Chinese, but Zhejiang University also offers more than a dozen master’s degree programs taught in English. The English-taught master’s offerings include programs in business, China studies and engineering. The university follows a four-term academic calendar. University resources include seven affiliated hospitals and a library that houses more than 6.83 million volumes. Among the laboratory facilities at Zhejiang University are more than a dozen national key labs that focus on different specialty areas, such as the State Key Lab of Clean Energy Utilization, the State Key Lab of Rice Biology and the State Key Lab of Modern Optical Instrumentation. Zhejiang University focuses on assiduous study and research, and science and technological innovation. It has launched a number of international high-end academic platforms and gathered masters, scholars and high-level research teams in various disciplines. In recent years, Zhejiang University maintains a leading position in China in output indicators including publications, patents and etc., and has made abundant important achievements in science, technology, humanities and social sciences. Zhejiang University always takes initiative in catering for national and regional needs, and exerts itself to become an influential high-level source of innovation and a pool of talents. In 2015, research fund at Zhejiang University amounted to 3,316 million Yuan. 

As of Dec. 2016, there are a total of 48,762 full-time students enrolled at Zhejiang University, including approximately 15,092 graduate students, 9,537 Ph.D. candidates, and 24,133 undergraduates. In addition, there are about 6,237 international students currently attending Zhejiang University. Among its approximate 3,502 standing faculty members, 1,552 faculty members have title of professor. With seven campuses, namely Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campus, Zhejiang University encompasses an area of 4,265,678 square meters with school buildings covering 2,575,983 square meters of floor space. The university library holds a collection of more than 6.935 million volumes. In addition, Zhejiang University has 7 high-level affiliated hospitals.

5. SOUTHWEST UNIVERSITY.

Southwest University (SWU) is a key comprehensive “211 project (top 100 universities in the 21th century gaining preferential support in the construction and development from Chinese government)” university and “985 Project (a constructive project for founding world-class universities in the 21st century conducted by the central government) Innovation Platform” Project university sponsored by China’s Ministry of Education. SWU is located in Beibei District, Chongqing Municipality, in a national scenic area Jinyun Mountain and surrounded by the scenic Jialing River, and covers a total area of over 600 hectares, with buildings nearly 1.8 million square meters. The forest coverage rate reaching 80%, SWU is well known for her “Garden Campus”.

SWU covers a wide range of majors including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, arts and management. The university now offers 5 state level key disciplines, 55 provincial/ministry level key disciplines, 22 postdoctoral programs, 68 doctoral programs, 1 professional Doctor’s program, 161 master's programs, 19 professional Master’s programs and 107 bachelor's programs. There are over 2800 full time teachers including 1800 professors and full-time researchers. There are a variety of students numbering over 100000, of whom 50000 are full-time undergraduates and postgraduates.

SWU is known nationwide for its teacher education and agricultural researches. Majors in pedagogy, psychology and agriculture enjoy distinguished predominance in China; and the research of Silkworm Genome is top in the world. A great deal of creative research fruits have been achieved in the fields of Zero Tillage Cultivation, Silkworm Genome, Education and Psychology of Southwestern Minorities, and Human Time Cognition, etc.

SWU has a strong research capability. She has built Chongqing Beibei National University Science Park, a national key laboratory, a national engineering research center, one Ministry-Municipality Key Laboratory Breeding Base, 10 key laboratories sponsored by Ministry of Education / Ministry of Agriculture, 3 Engineering Research Centers sponsored by Ministry of Education, 3 “111 Project” innovation talent recruitment bases, 2 national field observation stations, 2 scientific observation experimental stations sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture, 2 field bases sponsored by Ministry of Land and Resources, 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences sponsored by Ministry of Education, 13 key research bases for humanities and social sciences sponsored by Chongqing Municipality.
